Why Novel Designs Can Sometimes Stumble

Wanting to create something truly original is a natural design instinct. But when basic patterns change unexpectedly, users often feel hesitant. Here is why familiar design works so well.

When starting out in design, it is completely natural to want to create something fresh and visually distinct. Experimenting with unique layouts, hidden menus, and inventive gestures is an exciting way to explore what digital products can look like.

Yet, when these designs reach real testing, users often hesitate, miss key features, or feel a bit lost.

This does not mean creativity is unwelcome in interface design. Rather, it highlights how deeply people rely on familiar patterns to feel confident when using technology.

The comfort of existing mental models

In design psychology, a mental model is the internal picture someone has of how a system ought to work.

Usability expert Jakob Nielsen introduced a simple reality: Users spend the vast majority of their time on apps other than ours. Because of this daily routine, people may arrive with helpful muscle memory. For example:

  • They look for the logo in the top corner to return home.
  • They expect a magnifying glass icon to open a search field.
  • They anticipate primary buttons will look raised, filled, or distinctly interactive.

When an interface changes these everyday conventions, it asks the user to pause and reset their expectations. That brief pause can turn what was meant to be an exciting visual twist into a moment of hesitation.

Cognitive load: The quiet effort of learning new controls

Psychologist John Sweller’s research on Cognitive Load Theory explains that our working memory has a limited amount of bandwidth at any given moment.

When a user opens an app to accomplish a task maybe like booking a ticket or sending a note, their mental energy is best spent on that goal. If they also have to figure out a new navigation style or interpret abstract icons, they experience huge cognitive load.

Similarly, Hick’s Law shows that decision-making naturally slows down when choices feel unfamiliar or ambiguous. When interfaces use established design patterns (often called affordances or signifiers by design theorist Don Norman), users can interact almost on autopilot, feeling capable and relaxed.
